Choosing a mathematics A-Level course for year 5

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)


1.      How many periods of mathematics do I have in year 5?
8 periods over 10 days.

2.      What is a normal set in mathematics?
A set in which the syllabus is delivered at a normal rate.

3.      If I follow the normal set what happens in year 6?
You can continue with a single A-Level course only.

4.      What is an intensive set in mathematics?
A set in which the subject is delivered at a much faster rate. A lot more syllabus is covered during the academic year.

5.      Who should consider opting for an intensive set?
Students should only take this course if they have an aptitude in Mathematics.

6.      If I follow the intensive set what happens in year 6?
You either choose the One and a half A-Level course or the Double A-Level.

7.      What is the One and a half A - Level?
An intensive set. This is timetabled as one A-Level. At the end of the course students are awarded an A Level in Mathematics and an AS-Level in Further Mathematics.

8.      What is the Double A - Level?
A normal set. This is timetabled as two A-Levels. At the end of the course students are awarded an A-Level in Mathematics and an A-Level in Further Mathematics.

9.      Can the One and a half A – Level lead to a Double A-level?
Yes. Students are given the option in year 6 to complete the remaining half A-Level during afternoon classes (paid) organised by the Mathematics department. The additional units are taught in year 6 & 7.

10.  Who needs two A-Levels in Mathematics?
Those students thinking of studying Mathematics, engineering and other related subjects at university where universities are willing to accept or need two A Levels in Mathematics.

11.  How many units are there in an AS-level in Mathematics?
Three units.

12.  How many units are there in an A-level in Mathematics?
Six units - the three from the AS-Level and another three units.

13.  When do I take the exams if I’m in a normal set?
One unit at the end of year 5, two at the end of year 6 and three at the end of year 7.

14.  When do I take the exams if I’m in an intensive set?
Two units at the end of year 5, three at the end of year 6 and four at the end of year 7.

15.  When do I take the exams if I’m in a double A-Level set?
Two units at the end of year 5, four at the end of year 6 and six at the end of year 7.
